The UAE is one of the world's major aviation and air freight crossroads. Dubai International, Al Maktoum International at Dubai South, Zayed International in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah International and Ras Al Khaimah International together connect the country to cities on every continent. Behind every flight is a material handling operation that has to move bags and cargo quickly, accurately and without interruption.
This article looks at where conveyors are used in airport and air cargo operations in the UAE, the main equipment types, and what buyers should consider when specifying airport conveyor systems in UAE conditions. It is written for terminal operators, ground handlers, cargo terminal managers and the contractors who serve them.
Conveyors appear in more places than passengers usually notice:
Large terminal baggage handling systems are typically delivered by specialist integrators. However, many smaller systems, extensions, airline facilities, ground handling areas and cargo terminals use standard conveyor equipment from manufacturers like Conveline. Our airport conveyor solutions page gives an overview.
Air cargo is a much more varied flow than baggage. A cargo terminal at Dubai South, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah may handle express documents, e-commerce parcels, perishables, pharmaceuticals and general cargo in the same shift.
Express and cross-border e-commerce shipments are often handled on belt and roller conveyors with scanning, dimensioning and sortation. These flows look very similar to a parcel hub. See our courier, express and parcel solutions for typical layouts.
Cartons and cases broken down from or built up into unit load devices (ULDs) can be moved on roller conveyor systems and belt conveyors between acceptance, screening, storage and build-up areas.
Palletised and heavier shipments need stronger equipment. Pallet conveyor systems and transfer units can move these loads within the warehouse, while ULD handling equipment on the airside is usually a separate specialist system.
Cargo arrives and leaves by road, often from free zones such as JAFZA and SAIF Zone or from Khalifa Port. Truck loading and unloading conveyors reduce manual handling at the dock and speed up turnaround.
| Application | Common equipment | Key requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Check-in and transport | Belt conveyors, inclines, declines | Gentle handling of varied bag shapes |
| Routing to make-up | Diverters, merges, sorters | Accurate tracking linked to bag tag data |
| Arrivals reclaim | Feed belts and carousels | Steady flow, passenger safety |
| Express cargo | Belt and MDR conveyors with scanning | High throughput sortation |
| General cargo | Roller, pallet and transfer conveyors | Load capacity and robustness |
UAE airports and cargo terminals operate 24 hours a day, with banks of departures and arrivals that create sharp peaks. A conveyor failure during a departure bank can delay flights. Design for redundancy where possible, such as alternative routes or bypass lines, and make sure critical components can be replaced quickly.
Airside doors, baggage make-up halls and cargo docks are often exposed to outside air. In summer, temperatures in these areas can be well above those in the terminal. Fine dust from the apron and surrounding desert also reaches equipment. Specify motors, gearboxes, belts and electrical panels for these conditions, and use sealed bearings in exposed areas.
Maintenance windows at a busy hub are short. Conveyors should allow easy access to drives, take-ups and sensors. Standardising on a limited range of motors, belts and rollers simplifies spares and training.
Baggage systems must track each bag from check-in to make-up. Cargo systems increasingly use barcode or label scanning to link physical shipments to air waybills. Clarify how the conveyor controls interface with the airport or cargo management system and who is responsible for that interface.
Conveyors in public areas, such as check-in and reclaim, need guarding, emergency stops and safe gaps. Airside and cargo areas need clear walkways, crossovers and lockout procedures. Follow the airport operator's safety requirements and applicable local regulations.
Airport and cargo projects involve many stakeholders: the airport operator, airlines, ground handlers, cargo agents, consultants and contractors. A practical approach is to:
If the equipment is coming from overseas, plan logistics early. Our buyer's guide to importing conveyor systems from India to UAE explains documents and shipping.
For airport and cargo work, choose a supplier who can show experience with similar duty cycles and who manufactures the core equipment rather than just reselling it. Conveline Systems builds belt, roller, pallet, transfer and vertical conveyors in Ahmedabad and exports to the UAE and other markets. As a conveyor systems manufacturer in UAE projects rely on for standard and custom equipment, we work directly with operators and alongside integrators.
